Religion
Religion was very important in Ancient Greece. The people of Ancient Greece believed that the gods and goddesses would take care of them when they were living, as well as after they died. They felt that everything around them was controlled by different gods and goddesses. They believed that they controlled things like weather. The Greeks would ask the gods for help, or to be blessed. There was good gods and evil gods. The Greeks had special holidays to worship the gods and goddesses. Whole communities would get together to celebrate, or people could celebrate in their own homes.
They also had temples in Ancient Greece. They were very different then what temples are today. Temples in Ancient Greece were a "home" for the gods/goddesses.It was important that the god felt at home so that they didn't turn against the community. These homes were the nicest in Greece, equipped with servants. They received food daily. Not just anyone was allowed inside them. When they had celebrations for the gods, they were held outside of the temples.
Priests were also very important in Ancient Greece. They were believed to have a direct line to talk to the gods. It wasn't very easy to become a priest. You either had to be a child of a priest, or you were made one by a dying priest. The priests jobs were to take care of the temples and to look after the people visiting them.
